Longevity

We want to lock carbon up in the soil and living things and keep it there.

CBCF’s designs for farm systems have very long view: both ecological and financial plans look 40 years ahead. New revenue streams are included in the plans to take the place of carbon offsetting, once trees are mature. This supports trees to form a permanent part of the landscape and not make farmers dependent on funds from carbon offsetting to keep them in the ground.

In parts of the world where people’s lives are integrated with trees, they naturally take a long view. Farmers working with walnut trees plan 40 years ahead and have to involve the next generation, as standard practice.

Tree crops can also be used for purposes that keep the carbon locked up. Creating biochar from wood crops and burying it on farm is one way to lock up the carbon over geological time while simultaneously increasing soil fertility.
