The transition from conventional agriculture to agroforestry requires financial support. Introducing trees occupies land which would otherwise be producing crops and generating income on an annual basis.

Few farm businesses can survive several years with reduced income while they wait for an agroforestry system to mature.

Carbon offsetting can unlock the potential of farms to plant trees on a grand scale

Forward purchases of carbon credits can plug the financial gap created by transition into a more ecologically sound farming system, making it viable for farmers to plant new trees.

Carbon offsetting can unlock the potential of farms to plant trees on a grand scale. Converting just 10% of UK arable to an alley cropping Short Rotation Coppice system, we could plant 350 million new trees. Yet this will never happen without secure funding for farmers.

It can also make planting trees on arable or pasture farms a financially attractive proposition, creating new sources of revenue in addition to the carbon offsetting that can result in increased profitability. These can come from sale of products from the trees, as well as other farm crops supported by the ecological niches created by the agroforestry system.

With this model a single 1,000 hectare farm could plant from 250k to 1m new trees and sequester some 11,000 tons of carbon per annum.

As the system matures the farm design would enable the farm to becone financial independent from the carbom offsett payments.

We do not endorse or support the continuation of emmitting C02. All emmitters who purchase carbon credits through CBCF’s projects must be verified to be actioning a plan for carbon emmission reduction.

Agroforestry systems are already attractive for farmers for many reasons. With financial support from carbon offsetting we can see these systems spread their positive ecological impact all over the globe.
